Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

okay, Molly asked about granddaddy longlegs, I have another. Do ants eat plant parts? roots, anything? If I have ants in a pot, what do I do, just turn my head or.....?

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Ants harbor aphids to gather nectar for their sweetness. Do not.....I repeat DO NOT leave them there!!!

right, I knew that, but didn't know if ants actually eat the roots or anything themselves. I only found them in one place, out of the way, but wondered if I can just treat the soil with DE, maybe?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

One exception to the "no ants" rule seems to be peonies - I've read that if you don't see ants crawling around when the buds shoot up, the flowers won't open ...but since I doubt you're talkin' peonies, I say "Banish the beasts!" :)

TiG, in Mexico we saw leaf cutter ants. The week we were there, they stripped a flower bed of it's leaves.

is there something I can use as a soil 'wash' to pour in my pot?

Feed them cornmeal or sweet-n-low.

Kyle found fire ants in Iowa. I put out ant bait traps and they have disappeared. Boy, can they bite. Had them in Dr. Suess pot.

cala, someone told me to put unprocessed cornmeal from sunharvest in my soil, but i can't remember which problem it was to remedy. it couldn't have been ants...what is it used for besides that?
