Geranium macrorrhizum is a rich pink. I've alternated it in this view with the paler (and some say more interesting, but i'm not so sure) G. macrorrhizum 'Ingwersen's Variety'.
It really shows up the difference.
Geranium macrorrhizum contrasts
very very pretty!
Oh, Philomel. These are truly beautiful. I am jealous. I've really got to try branching out into more geraniums. Some of them don't like to winter over in Alaska.
Whereas on the rose forum i bemoan the lack of scent, here it's probably a good thing we don't have smellovision as the leaves of this plant have a very particular whiff about them. I find it quite pleasant, but there are those who can't stand it. And it's one of those smells it's hard to ignore!
I've always enjoyed introducing newcomers to "chocolate lilies". They have a distinct scent of fresh manure.
philomel, i agree, it can be quite pleasant, but when i've been harvesting the seeds it can give off quite a whiff!
weeingreens Maccrorrhizum are supposed to be one of the hardiest geraniums around. Robin Parer who runs her specialist nursery in California says Macc will easily withstand the freezing temperatures flung at in Alaska. Go on give it a try!
OK, I'm game... can I grow them from seed?
Of course you can . Ihave MAcc Bevans Variety and hopefully Snow Sprite in seed this year. I'll send you a photo, as they are unlike the ones above
Each year I pick a plant species to study and to try out in our climate. Two years ago it was foxglove, and this year it was campanula. Next spring I want to start some different geranium varieties. Of course, I won't give up new varieties of the past, so I usually have lots of seedlings!
I'll see if i can find you some seed from the two above Weez. It should be ready soon.
Thanks, Phil. I'd be so grateful. You know you're welcome to any seed I have. I just love starting new seeds!
i've always been much more into cuttings as far as stuff from my own garden goes (though heavily into bought seed as the various companies will testify). So i'm frustrated not to be able to share those with you.
However, ive been out having a look round thisafternoon, and i reckon there could be the odd seed here and there so........
I feel the same way about roots and cuttings. I've never mailed them out, so I'm a little unsure how to mail successfully. Of course, mailing live plants to and from the UK could be very pricey if the package is intercepted!
Quite ;-D
