I'm confused. 2 years ago I bought 2 trees labeled "Chinese Fringe Tree." I love them! Problem #1 is I planted them in separate areas. Now I wish I had planted them side by side (maybe 6 feet apart) to create a denser inter-woven summertime screening effect between our back porch and a neighbor's window. (Doesn't bother me for them to lose leaves in winter when we don't use our back porch). I don't want to dig up 1 of the 2 and move it at this stage because they've just started looking great. Problem #2 is that I'm couldn't find another tree to match them this year. The "Chinese Fring Trees" or Chionanthus something in a couple of nurseries this year had larger leaves, denser foilage and lots of loose, lacy & stringy fringe. The ones I have have smaller, darker green leaves, the tree is more open and airy, and in late April the fringe it had was more like little white tassels or beards.
So, is mine really a "Chinese" Fringe Tree or perhaps the Virginicus variety - or are there several varieties??? Sorry I don't have a photo to offer.

Fringe Tree varieties
Dirtdobber, it appears there are probably two many species grown in the U.S. - Chionanthus virginicus (sometimes listed as C. virginica) and Chionanthus retusus (sometimes found as C. retusa.)
Here are photos of each:
virginicus: http://www.streetside.com/plants/floridata/ref/c/chionan.htm and http://www.floridata.com/ref/c/chionan.cfm
retusus: http://www.salisbury.edu/arboretum/Chionant/ChRe/ChRhHM.html (this site has closeups of flower, fruit, foliage, bark, plus sillhouette, etc.)
