Fir bed behind our patio

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

This is taken from the back of the yard looking toward the house. We layered newspaper, followed by compost, over the area beneath these fir trees. In another few weeks, we'll add a little hardwood mulch. By the time it settles, it won't be more than 2" or so of a layer. Hoping and praying the weeds stay down, but keeping the Round-Up handy just in case, LOL.

When we bought this house in 1999, the branches of these firs went all the way to the ground, and many were so dead and ratty looking we cut off the first 10' or so of branches. Now we have a place to sit in the shade and enjoy the breeze. Little by little, we're surrounding that area with flower beds, but the spot directly beneath them is too dry for most things.
