Ok, that makes it 6 moles in 1 week that I've caught! 5 with the Nash Choker Loop and 1 by filling the tunnel with water and flipping him out of the ground when he surfaced for air. Just caught #6 last night. He was in the trap when I checked it a few minutes ago.
6 moles
well, that does it! I am off to buy a Nash Choker Loop trap! We had moles when we moved here almost 2 years ago. But they suddenly left when we moved in. I guess the noise from our kids drove them off (the house sat empty for 3 years before we moved in). Well, the farmers finally got into their field the last 2 weeks & guess where the moles went? My yard and my flower garden! I've not found any new mole hills in the back yard, but they pop up daily in the garden. I had moved a few plants last week and one of them was upended in the morning with pile of dirt next to it. It might still pull out of it, but doesn't look good! They can mess with my lawn all they want, but not my flower garden!
I'm getting this picture of you, Jon: The Great White Mole Hunter. LOL. Your posts kill me!
I think I'm up to 9 now. After the 9th mole was caught, things got quiet for awhile and I haven't seen any activity near the house :) I did see a fresh tunnel near the house just today and I have the trap set again. We'll see what I come up with this time. I usualy set 2 or 3 traps in the same area when I can. I've caught one once where they slipped past the first trap (setting it off) and then the second trap got him.
HC,
Please, tell me more about this mole trap.
Is it something that you bought from a local
hardware store, or did you order it from a catalog/online? How do you know that a mole has set it off?
Is it easy to set?
Details, please! :-)
I got mine at: http://www.nwtrappers.com/catalog/traps/gophermole.asp
I think you can find them locally, but they aren't as common as some of the other mole traps.
It's easy to set and easy to tell if it's been tripped. The main part of the trap springs up and that's how you tell if it's been set off. The picture on the website I gave you shows the trap as it would look if it were tripped.
Basically, the two loops of wire push down into the soil and rest just below the bottom of the tunnel. The trigger rests on top of the soil...so you press the dirt down in the center. The idea is, the mole comes through and tries to re-open the tunnel and pushes up on the soil...thus pushing up on the trigger which sets off the trap and pulls the wire loops up and squeezes the mole to death. This trap works in either direction the mole may be coming from in the tunnel.
Thanks, HC! :-)
Those are some nasty-looking traps...
We'll be ordering one, pronto! ;-)
