3 moles since Sunday

Zone 6, OH(Zone 6a)

I got back from the Smoky Mountains on Sunday around 12 noon. I set a trap near the fence and flushed the tunnels near my house to catch (and kill) 2 moles. I caught a 3rd mole yesterday only 2 hours after setting the trap near my house (just got it from the UPS man that day). I've seen the fresh tunnels and have been very good at setting traps and so on after seeing them. The Nash Choker Loop trap is the best I've seen so far. Out of all the moles I've caught, all but 1 have been captured in the Nash Choker Loop.

A good source is Northwest Trappers Supply in MN. I ordered another trap on Monday and I got it on Wed. http://www.nwtrappers.com/ Nash Choker Loop is about $12.

I was reading that usually there are no more than 2-3 moles per acre. Well, they must be sending in reinforcements because I've caught around 5 in the last 2 months...all within about 150' of each other. Sometimes I catch them in the same tunnel...like along the fence. I also read that the mounds of dirt usually indicate a deep tunnel which leads to a nest. Maybe I might get out my hose and fill up a few of those and see if someone comes running to the surface for air :)

Years ago I lived in Garden Grove, California. I had rather sandy soil. There was a large empty field behind my house and it had a lot of gophers. Well they bulldozed the field and put up apartments. The gophers moved into the neighboring yards. I caught several with traps but the last one was wily and I could not get him. I resorted to digging trenches across his tunnels and flooding small areas. He kept popping up in another spot. One Saturday after I had run water for hours the trenches suddenly drained. The water was simply disapearing!

Then I heard voices from the yard of the widow next door. I looked over the fence and saw two firemen from the station next door to her. They were discussing calling the city to see about the location of watermains. There was a pool of water bubbling up from the ground at their feet.

"So that is where my gopher went!" I called out. They turned on their heels and left.
