Iris bed

Porterfield, WI(Zone 4b)

I could use a few fresh ideas for my iris bed. I have one on both sides of my driveway, at the entrance, they are only about 4X8' each, and kidney shaped. I have two varieties of iris in them, to extend the iris season, a hardy mum off to one end, and some young yucca's at the farthest end from the drive. This is a nasty dry late summer spot, and it looses it's appeal when the iris go down hill. My ultimate goal in all of my beds is to create interest for all seasons. Any idea what else could go in there for a little more late color, but it can't be too large?? I'm open for suggestions! L

How much sun do the beds get?

Full Sun, sandy soil, too far away to water, gets really dry in late summer.L

how about an annual like portulaca in front, and another taller sedum behind that, but in front of the iris. there are some nice salvias that are pretty drought tolerant too.
