Gravel Garden What to plant?

Warkworth, Northumbe, United Kingdom

I am so lucky, I have just had a summerhouse built and we have spent two days creating a gravel garden around an octagonal patio. Now for the best part what shall I plant in the gravel. wwe have lawn to one side and flower beds in front. any suggestions would be welcome

I've been having a think about this one, how about some scented herbs like Thymes, Sages and Lavenders?

alpine type geraniums like farreri and argentium which wont invade or grow very tall.

any mediterranean herbs would be good.. as baa says, also california poppies are supposed to look nice in gravel in drifts.

I have just found out that unless you dig the ground over first it is really hard work planting through gravel and a small cross cut in the membrane. The area was previously grass. ah well you live and learn.
