Squirrels gone mad with power

Newport, OR(Zone 5a)

I've fought squirrels before but it always seemed like a pretty fair fight. Usually they just ate a little fruit and left some for us too. We started feeding the birds and the little beasts have arrived at our yard in droves. They clean up under the bird feeders as an appetizer and then proceed to my flower garden, eating every thing in sight, Even going so far as to dig up bulbs. They think nothing of lunching in a patch of mothballs and whirlygigs that I've put out to frighten the rabbits away. Is there anything to be done? Help....I think they are snickering at us.

i have the same problem here in Hesperia. my landlord's only advice is to set up a trap which he does. once the trap catches the squirrels, he drive up in the mountains and set them free. he say he bought the trap at Johhny's seeds they have a web site. check the Plants Database.

there is another trap on the WWW, it is a contraption hook to the faucet. when there are movement in the garden, the water is suppose to turn on automatically. the problem is it is too expensive.

one day i watering in the yard, i was startled when i saw movement, it is squirrel. i tried to use the jet stream and shoot the water at the critter, he didn't badge at all. u are right, they seem to snicker at us.

others have suggested an inhumane solution, use a beebee gun, blast them critters away. i am not capable of doing that as i am scared to use a gun. sorry i wish i knew of a better solution :(... ma vie

Well, I've used every trick I know of and some I got off three different garden forums Nothing works. Even tried a pellet gun but can't shoot straight.I tried cayenne pepper, bloodmeal, moth balls ,Cages and screaming at them. The Pepper works until the sprinklers come on and wash it off. The little beasts are especially fond of Baby's breath, which naturally is my favorite thing in the garden. I know of only one more thing to do. Stop feeding the birds. I think they find plenty of bugs and worms to eat in my garden. They will have to work for thier living like the rest of us. I'm still open to suggestions, however.

i did stop feeding the bird around here, except the hummingbird feeder. i still see them hanging around. now they have gotten wiser by visiting at night where no one will see them. i know of their presence cause each morning i see some diggings on the pots of bulbs. i hope none of the bulbs are missing as i see new shoots where they are planted.

i have also tried the hot pepper method, but keep applying fresh ones after each watering. i buy the hot dried peppers from the Mexican store. roughly grind them on the blender. i do not know if they work cause these beast just keep coming back!!! i do not know what else to suggest to u. sorry! i can not use gone, cause i am scared of using guns too! besides if i understand right, it is against the law to shoot them critters.

maybe others have a better idea???

Thanks neighbor, What I've found is they stay away from the freshly peppered things and go on to something they haven't noticed before. My next trick is to spray the whole garden with fish emulsion. Whewwww...that would take MY appetite away! And I guess rabbits and squirrels don't like the smell of dead things since they are vegetarians. I'll let you know how this tactic works.
