Lard for making birdfood?

Does anyone have any good ideas on where to get lard for mixing with other goodies for the birds? Crisco seems like a possibility but I wondered what others used. Thanks in advance!

Oh, and what is the best way to make these goodies & hang them out for free feeding? Should I just put a string in the middle when refrigerating my mixture or should I put in on a mold?
