Cutting back Artemesia

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi Guys,
I had the most beautiful Artemesia 'Powis Castle'. After a couple of years it grew to about three cubic feet. I read up on how and when to cut it back and followed the directions. I don't remember now, what I did or what season, but I do remember that it never came back. Last year I got a great deal on several smaller ones. I will need to shape them up as they are growing spindly-tall and thin like little trees. I don't want to make the same mistake as last time. If anyone has experience, I would be truly greatful for help.
Thanks so much,
Michele

Thought i'd already replied, but must have pressed the wrong button, LOL!!
Cut mine back by about two thirds after they've flowered and they seem ok. Someone else here may have more experience.
I cut them back like that in the spring - after risk of frost is past - if they're too straggly at the beginning of the season.
