Scratching cats

Forgive me if this subject has been covered but I ran cats+scratching and got nothing. My daughter has moved back home with her 2 cats. I actually like these cats considering that I'm a dog person. But they are making very short work of the backs of my chairs and shredding my carpets. Is there anything I can use or do to get them to stop? They already have 2 REALLY ugly scratching posts downstairs that they ignore in favour of my furniture.
