Scientists have discovered a master 'fat gene' which is critical to putting on weight. The gene, called Ppargamma, triggers the final step in the trasition from a pre-adipocyte cell to a fat cell. Even if other fat-creating processes are present, fat will not develop without Ppargamma. The discovery, made by two research teams from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer and Harvard Medical School in the US, could pave the way to new treatments for obesity.
