St.John's Wort & Black Cohosh

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

I took these two herbs together. The pharmacist said it would be alright. I got the worst headache of my life and I never get headaches. I was wondering what could have cause it. Has anyone else ever taken these two together? Lisa

Lisa: You might be allergic to one of them.

(Zone 8a)

St. John's Wort is most typically used
to treat mood disorders and anxiety.
Whereas Black Cohosh is used for the
organs.
St. John's Wort will lessen mood swings
during menopause or the change of life,
anxiety and stress and other various
nervous conditions.
Black Cohosh causes uterin, bowel and
other organs to contract. Many times
it is taken during the monthly cycle
to eleviate cramps and speed up the
process to completion. And it is also
used commonly for it's laxative ef-
fects.
I personally have taken them together,
however, I know exactly how much is
safe to take together. And by the
symptoms you have stated, I would
say that you either took too mush of
one, the other, or both. OR you are
allergic to ONE of them, or the mix-
ture of them. The chances of your being
allergic to both are very slim.
I suggest you either take one without
the other to see which one is effect-
ing you. If you do not suffer further
problems, it is most likely the mix-
ture your body rejects (OR) the dose
you took before. (ALWAYS be extra-
careful when self-medicating with ANY
drug Natural or not. A local herb
store will have pamphlets on such
dosages, and even Wal-Mart sells herb
companion book with herb property
listings and medicating directions.
