Jumping worms

Dundee, NY

Within the last year I have learned about jumping worms and then found most of my gardens invaded! (I thought they were young earthworms, which are also invasive by the way.) There is a lot of misinformation out there on the subject. So far the best resource I have found for the northeast is from Massachusetts :

I now take my small bucket out with me every trip to my gardens with 2-4 “ of one part vinegar to three parts water. (Faster than soap and water. ) I wash my gloves and tools after each use as well as the bottoms of my shoes I take note not to go from an infested garden to a non-investive. I also make sure where I discard the water as the vinegar does not kill the cocoons/eggs. I searched your site and didn’t find any information on jumping worms. Hope this may help some of your readers.

It’s great that you’re taking proactive steps to manage the jumping worm invasion in your gardens. These invasive worms can indeed be mistaken for young earthworms, and the misinformation around them is concerning. Your method of using a vinegar solution to clean your gloves, tools, and shoes is an effective strategy to prevent spreading them from infested areas to non-infested ones. It's also wise to be cautious about where you discard the cleaning water, as it doesn't kill the cocoons or eggs. Thank you for sharing the resource from Massachusetts; it’s valuable for anyone dealing with this issue. Hopefully, more information on jumping worms will be made available to help others in the fight against these invasives.
