Please help ID bushy plant w/lanterns

This plant has returned voluntarily 2 seasons.
It has a few small yellow flowers and many green lanterns… maybe Gooseberry, maybe Chinese or Japanese Lantern?
The leaves are different on each of those plants.

One or the other but you'll need ripe fruit color for positive id. Tomatillos also look similar but require a minimum of two for cross pollination and a long(er) growing season. Mine are just beginning to set.
