Limelight Hydrangea. I don\'t want a tree!

Wurtsboro, NY

Hello -- I've been growing limelight hydrangeas in Sullivan county NY with great success. But my Limelights are trying to turn into trees even though I prune them back every year. I wanted to grow those nice full bushes. Now one of them has a stem that's about 1" or so in diameter. What to do??? Should I just let it grow into a tree at this point, or maybe cut that big stem back to 12" from the ground? Any suggestions as to how to turn my limelights into a bush a keep it that way?

You're fighting the nature of the plant. Hydrangea 'Limelight' is a big plant, almost a small tree. A happy one will grow to 8', maybe taller. Make your life easier and let it be what it wants to be. Look on the bright side: now you have a chance to buy a different hydrangea that's a nice bushy shrub.
