Best/Worse/What did I learn today? Come sit awhile and chat..newcomers always welcome!!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Hi - nearest wildfire is 4 hours drive away. It's still VERY dry here!
The young couple is looking for a piano mover in the area, and if they can find one reasonably priced, they will take it.
Off to coffeetime - chat later

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Good morning everyone. Thanks for the new thread Betty.
Most of west Texas, because it's the edge of the desert has clay soil. Some people will get jack hammers to break it up, and add lots of black dirt to it, but that's very expensive.
So most of us that want garden get big pots or make a raised garden.
I talked to Judy yesterday. They are in Florida, remodeling their home down there.
They will be back home by Friday I think she said.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Betty, they closed almost 2 weeks ago, got the Keys 10 days ago. They have started to pack, STARTED to pack. They really did no advance packing & sorting. I am so disgusted and angry that I cry. I'll let you know when they are finally gone. Adam has taken this whole week off from work.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Well I’m glad you are out of wildfire danger Susan and also hoping they come to get the piano..wouldn’t think would want to try moving something so heavy and be responsible should something happen but her is hoping.

I remember Lindakay the red clay in Tennessee but didn’t pay attention to Texas clay.
So would you have trees on properties?

Oh Pat, not a wonder you are disgusted. I’d be saying ‘seeing you have the week off Adam & appreciate all I’ve done for you and your family i suggest that by Sunday what is not moved i will assume you no longer want any of it and will call a company in to remove it!’

That being said though they may feel what is left is junk and decide to just leave it all. Am sure you are just chomping at the bit to start having your home, your things back.

Lindakay glad Judy hasn’t been on because of ill health. Steve does such beautiful work that i am sure their home will be lovely.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

No trees in this yard, but neighbors have trees. The guy next door has lilac trees. They were in bloom a month ago when I got up here. It has been so long since I saw a lilac tree.

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

I had a horse for years, but it's been almost 20 years since he died.
Did you hear from Sharon how her dog did at the shows? How long will it take for him to be back in full coat? Afghans don't shed like other dogs, so it's not something we have to deal with, only in the girls after a season they will blow coat.

Victoria Harbour, ON

They sure smell nice, going to miss my trees this year, have a couple boomerangs that were not plowed over, just maybe they will have them.

Couldn’t get Westminster at 1:45, drats, have to wait for Sharon’s report.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Got a phone call from the young couple - they can get a moving company on Friday at 11am to take the piano. The $$ is within their budget. I just have to move a desk that's near the door. I measured the 2 arbors it has to go through, in my side yard, to my front yard where I have the parking pad. I just may put a quilting frame where it is now :)

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

Great news, Susan!!

Betty, I was having trouble with the Westminster streaming site, too. Results are posted. Nuuktok's Atka Kunik was award of merit. Not too shabby. He's a young dog.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Susan, I am excited for you, it will open up a lot of free space for you.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Thanks Deb, haven’t heard from Sharon, perhaps she rushed out to get a few hours of driving in so she can make it home tomorrow. Do not know what ‘award of merit is?’ Could it be that he showed well? Lucky you that they don’t blow their coats regularly, do they shed a bit on regular basis. Know Sharon has enough hair from her 3 dogs to cover a forth they shed so bad. Did your breeding take and if so when will they be born?

That is good news Susan, sure hope your arbors don’t get wrecked
You won’t know what to do with all your extra space.i found when i had regular quilting frame up it took longer to quilt then when quilting on frame as i would tell myself I could quilt later, got to the point Roger made a pulley system that i could raise it to the ceiling so it wasn’t in the way all the time.

Ziggy and i wasted another day in bed.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

If you needed the rest it was NOT wasted. I know that is hard for you Betty.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

No, Betty, I am not done but I have no appointments this week and hope to be done by the end of the week. Housekeeper was here today so I worked outside all day. Still putting items where they belong and cleaning out corners. Having dinner at PF Chang's Wednesday night. Mother's Day, Medical School Graduation and Granddaughter and family moving to Arizona. I am paying. It was my invite and no one said no.

Susan, that is one large piece of furniture. You will be amazed how much room youwill have with it gone. So pleased the wild fires are not in your area.

Pat, I will b very surprised if they do not leave the place trashed and many things left behind they do not want to move.

I have a family phone call. I will return.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Sadly Sharon, I would not be surprised either.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Linda, I do the same with the majority of my plants. My problem, is I have great soil because I have added compost for many years but the tree roots go searching for nutrients and water. Here in Nevada they move sidewalks up and over to get under them to get to water. In the spring, we dig at the edge of the sidewalk to cut off the roots trying to escape into the main landscape. They will also find a hole in a pot and go through that hole. If I have a pot failing, first thing I look for is a tree root invasion.

Betty, I am glad you are listening to your body. Now if you can find someone to mow your grass so you do not attempt to do it. I know how you feel about leaves in your sitting area. I cleaned mine again today. Probably third time in 4 weeks. Pine trees and wind do not make me a happy camper. Soon the pine trees should be rid of all of their seeds. You can only hope.

Darlene, I am so glad we do not have ticks. There are ticks in Nevada but not in my area.

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

Oh Pat, I hope this ordeal will be over soon. How sad it is your son causing all this grief, well I'm sure he is spurred on by his mate.

Betty, if your body feels lazy, listen to it....I would do well to listen to mine also. As soon as Walt is more healed, I will have the luxery of tending to mine.

I listened to my own head today after he had a horrid night of not much sleep and difficulty breathing. I took him to ER. The brought him in immediately and run him through a gauntlet of tests. Their findings??? He has too much fluid in his lungs. Imagine that. They kept him and hopefully he will have that taken care of tomorrow. Soon he will be feeling so much better and back on track with his healing.I'm hoping to find out why this is happening to him. They had him on 4 times the dose of Lasix and no relief. I need some answers.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

YIKES, 4x the normal dosage of Lasix!!!

Marie & I went to the movies tonight, I was questioning my choice of movies... I don't think watching another woman mourn the loss of her male companion was an inspired choice. Thank goodness it had a happy ending.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning, will be a high of 59°F today so with any luck it will topple over into the 60’s.

Karen is really frustrating the having no answers! At least if you know what is the cause, good or bad we can deal with it. Thank goodness you are both taking your turn and not ill at same time. Hope the get the excess water taken out this morning.

What was the name of the movie you saw? Ohhh had similar happen to me, friend of Roger’s came to visit and took me out to a movie..name of movie? Ghost, all he could say was I’m so sorry..not a great pick.

Sharon, i really need need to start doing composting, don’t really understand composting but imagine I can buy it by the bag! Mowing for me is easy as I bought a great riding lawnmower about 5-6 years ago, the way my property is designed there is little that needs a push lawnmower and could be done with the weeder.i will patiently waiting for my 6 weeks then will edge the gardens, that is quite a chore.

On my list for shopping is more containers as I need to get those Angel trumpets in pots. Wonder what the best soil is for them is?

June & Pat are coming this morning, , both painting clay flower pots. At 4 Giorgia is coming to work a tad on the Canada banner. Other than, both will be no lifting involved. I haven’t been sleeping well since surgery, had just fallen asleep when at 1:30am I could see lights swirling on my wall, got up and there were 2 emergency vehicles 2 doors up from me..hope all ok.

Best I finish my coffee and make my bed

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Sharon, when I lived in Michigan everyone had problems with tree roots growing where they weren't wanted.
Karen, praying for both of you guys.
Betty, angel trumpets like a good soli. I used bags of miracle grow soil. They also love lots of fertilizer. When I grew them I fertilized them once a week.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Linda, once a week fertilizing is a LOT of tending!! (they would die of neglect if mine, I am sad to say)
"Love Again" was the name of the movie.:

Victoria Harbour, ON

Might see when that movie is playing here, you said good ending so worth a try.

I will mark that kind of soil on my list Lindakay, looked at forecast and in 50’s/60th next 2 weeks, 3 days of rain so next time I am in town I can buy some and get these planted, been tending them since last fall. Someone also told me i should be buying worm castings?? Do they like full sun..had them planted last few years behind a shrub and could really see them when they opened, would love them on all the decks and front gardens.

Got all my to do’s done..had forgot to call Re new rood, when i spoke to agent she asked me if I smoked, said no so saved $126. On my policy.

I have to feel like I am making a small diggerence 8n my community, think I told you when I spoke to the hospital admittance person when I said my name she went on about all the lovely thing I’ve been teaching kids..made me smile.

Well i made appointment at denturist today, it’s located in Penetanguishene.. secretary asked me name and address then she said, “omg I meet the famous Betty Pauze, I see all the sewing projects kids make and my granddaughter goes to all your craft workshops” hurray for me lol

Think it was Sunday I made egg salad sandwiches, put the salad in refrigerator after making a sandwich, wonder if it would would be still good?

I thank you all for your help Re my raising plants and what they best need to survive.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

today's Tuesday, I would think it should be good. I guess in part would depend on WHAT all you put in it? Onion & mayo? I would be tempted to google the question.

YES, it does make a difference! That is so funny Betty that you got those 2 responses so close together.

Maryville, TN(Zone 7a)

2:00 this afternoon Walt got his left lung drained of fluid. His relief was immediate. He could take deep breaths. We now know who our new Pulmonary specialist is. She removed 1.4 liters of fluid. It was amazing to watch the container fill up. Even more amazing how fast Walt felt so much better.

Actually Betty, I'm not feeling good but I had to get Walt taken care of.. I have an appointment with my Oncologist on Thurs. And it's way overdue. I fear my blood counts are not going to be good.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Betty, angel trumpets don't like it in full sun. They bloom better in Temps under 90 degrees. I had mine in the east side of the house, so they got morning sun, not the hot afternoon sun.
Glad to hear so many knew your name. That's awesome.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Betty, worm castings are compost. And they are very expensive. I start in the late fall when all the leaves fall. I grind them up, actually, many of the landscapers that deliver me leaves, have already run them over with the lawn mower. Then I just place them in a pile. Then I throw egg shells, any veg cuttings, coffee grounds and any soil that I am taking out of old pots where the soil need to be refreshed. Then just water it. In my area, the worms just show up. I have also just dug a hole next to a plant, filled it with veg cuttings, coffee grounds and such and then just cover it up. Worms will find it and turn the scraps into wonder nutritious soil. One of the tasks I am completing now is covering the mulched leaves and ground alfalfa pellets I spread everywhere. I cover it with any soil I can purchase at a good price, because what I have already added is going to change the soil after digestion by the worms. Rolly Pollies also do the same thing. I do a lot of gardening on my hands and knees, so if I am in an area that has the leaves and I will throw on the soil and just mix it up by hand. BUT, I am crazy.

Karen, I am so relieved Walt is getting the fluid out of his lungs. What a remarkable improvement that will make in his breathing. I hope he improves, so you can see your doctor.

Pat, I have not been to a movie in years. But pleased you enjoyed this one. Hopefully your tenants will be completely moved by the weekend, so you cn start getting your home back together.

The name of the city you are going to for the Dentist is Oh My Goodness.

It is just about time for me and my animals to hit the bed. Sweet Dreams everyone and Good Morning.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I forgot to say, congratulations to "The Real Betty Pause".

Victoria Harbour, ON

So glad that Walt had the procedure and all that you are seeing almost instantaneous results.sounds overwhelming worrying about Walt while Walt is worrying about you.. not a good situation.let’s hope tomorrow your doctor will have some answers as to looking after you and you Walt.

Sharon, there must be a book out there whose title is “composting
for Dummies” now at the edge of my property out back where we have throw leaves for decades must have made new soil. I went for a ride with Sharon today to pick up her dog that was being boarded with a friend, we had a beautiful breakfast at Stacks pancake house, brought home enough for supper. Next door is a great fabric store, looked around, came home with nothing. Went to the big garden Gallery in Barrie, wow, you would go crazy there..i did pick up a 2’ red mandavilla. I will put it in same container as last years mandavilla that I cut at base of plant..hopefully the 2 together in same pot will look stunning.

The Indian name Penetanguishene is the town I was raised in, it’s translation is ‘place of the while rolling sands’

I'm guessing to pronounce "Penetanguishene" you have to be a local! LOL Kennewick is "Winter Haven", since we have relatively mild winters.

I pray you and Walt both continue to get better daily. With Walt on the mend, Karen, you can address your health concerns.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the warm welcome back, everyone! When I made up my username, I lived in the woods in Kentucky, hence "KyWoods". My name is actually Renee. Unfortunately, we had to sell the wooded acreage when my parents became too old to maintain it, plus the driveway was impassable in bad winter weather. I sure miss that place. It was 25 acres and I loved hiking it and cutting trails, seeing the wildlife.
They bought a condo where there were no stairs, and it was a smart move. We sold that after five years, when Mom and Dad both had to go to a nursing home. Dad left us in January of last year, and we are trying to hold on to Mom as long as we can.

Thanks for letting us know your story, Renee! It's good to know where we "come from" because on the other side of the monitor is a whole person and we're always happy to get to know the other person!
Me - my nickname Tallulah came from when I was 22 and acting in kids' plays. Between plays we were always rehearsing, and during one of the rehearsals my acting coach told me that I am like Tallulah Bankhead. She was a very flamboyant personality and was in the b&w movie Lifeboat. I lived in Winnipeg,Manitoba most of my life, but moved to Calgary, Alberta in 2006, then moved to a tiny hamlet (still in Alberta) in 2016. I'm a retired senior and both my parents have passed. Next year will be my milestone (70) and I'm looking forward to it :)

good to see you back Renee. Selling off 25 acres of beautiful forest and trails would be hard!
I've always considered it fun & interesting when/how people get their handles or nicknames. When I first got an email address, I asked my 3rd son to help me decide. He laughed and said :Mommyhearless. I responded with Mommyheartless!! so I used that until I went to get my Master's in psychology and had to give my email. THAT is when I knew I had to get another one!!! I was living in Walla Walla, WA and going to school. I always referred to Walla Walla as w2 so I took on the email of psychw2, that has remained my handle ever since (going on 19 years now.) Same long-in ID I use for everything.

I retired almost 3 years ago & lost my sweet husband more than 3 years ago. I am an avid gardener and have recently beginning quilting in earnest. I live in the DRY part of Washington, the Southeastern corner.

Evening all,

i wasn’t very creative with my name

Nice property Renee, can understand why you miss it.

Am sitting in a parking Marriott Hotel Toronto parking lot waiting for the lady who is picking up Sharon’s dog to show in London. She left Quebec City, hope she speeds as I want to be home.

Spent 3 hours with mom as we won’t get to see her Mother’s Day, feel good about that!.

Doubt we will be home til 7

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I would be terrified to ship my pets in an airplane. That's a long ride for them.

My username I chose, because my maiden name is Tate. Everyone called us taters when we were growing up.

Oops Lindakay, London, Ontario.
Looking for the sandman, think my address has been scratched off.

When my first was born, I bought my mom a small photo album. On the front it had S.O.G.W.P.I.P. That stood for Silly Ole Grandma With Pictures In Purse. When I first joined the internet we had to have a screenname with 10 letters or numbers. I chose SiliOleGma...Silly Ole Grandma. Never changed it.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

That is so great to know. See Renee, you brought out something none of us knew. My WormsLovSharon, comes from my composting and gardening. I just get such a thrill seeing bsby worms in my compost pile. I put half sized eggs shells in the pile instead of crushing them. The baby worms are born and live in them for quite a while.

Betty, very happy you were able to make the trip. Google Composting. They have many U tube videos on composting. That area where you have been piling leaves probably has fantastic soil. You can make composting easy, just like your pile in the back of your property. Just have someone dig out the soil and start a new pile in the same place. You can spread the compost anywhere you want to enrich the soil.

I worked on cleaning and painting pots today. I thought I would get them ready and planted today but only got them painted. So tomorrow I will get them planted. Weather was beautiful today but I had to go inside and change om a long sleeve shirt into a mid upper arm length sleeve because I was getting so hot, I had sweat running down my face and couldn't see because of the salt water in my eyes. An our high was only 82. We will move into the nineties later next week.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

I worked at Marie's, marking alterations on her clothes while my laundry ran. She gave me 4 new tops & 1 pair of pants. She is at least a full size smaller than me so as we both lose weight, I get her clothes. The pants were some she bought at a thrift store and never fit her right, so they had not been shortened. Usually I can only wear her blouses, she is so much shorter in the legs than I am. . I borrowed a cute denim jacket. White background with little blue roses on it.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

wonderful that the 2 of you can trade off clothing! The outfit sounds adorable - picture?
In 2 hours the piano will be moved out, making ROOM in my den :) Also, the weight will not be pulling the addition from the main home. Always a good thing - more function AND more room!

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Susan, THAT is exciting news!! I rejoice with you!

I will try to get a picture when I wear it. She is not ready to give it up so it gets returned soon!!! (Although I tell her, if it's big on me, it WAY too big on her! LOL)

Yes, I am blessed that I get her clothes AND she feels better giving up her favorites when I get them LOL. It would be such a blessing to be ONE size and stay there. Sis & I have both have gone up and down the scale HUGE amounts and never stabilized. We are committed to having this be the LAST time, even if it is NOT as low as we would like. It will take at LEAST another 2 years probably.
