SOLVED: Giant Cane Begonia reaches the eaves of the house

Robertstown, Australia(Zone 10a)

I want to start by saying this is not my plant, and I don't even live near it anymore. However it is the bigggest begonia I have ever seen, and I would really like a proper namer for it. Any Ideas out there?

Ciao, KK.

The only begonia I know that gets huge is Begonia coccinea - 15 feet. I know there is a white flowered variety but it is hard to find.

Here is the pink form.

Begonia luxurians can get that tall, but this is another sp.
I will see if I can get an ID on this tomorrow.

I agree with ZilyZily. B. coccinea is the parent of many cane begonias with flowers from white to red and shades in between. According the late Charles Jaros, he told me that it is common to just say B. coccinea var. 'hort' (hort being short for horticultural) because there are too many to name (lookalikes from named varieties). Seeds easily germinate and with minimal care, and become the next hybrid to either cull or keep for one's private collection.

I would always defer to hcmcdole as he is really a begonia expert. I am but a dabbler.

I did look more today and found a list of begonias in Australia. Interesting in light of what Butch said above, the 1st 3 are Begonia coccinea hybrids. But look at the last one, a hybrid too but looking much like the 1 you saw in Australia, Kaelkitty.
