Not a beetle; it's Eurydema oleracea, a shield bug known by several common names, including the rape bug, the crucifer shield bug, the cabbage bug, and the brassica bug.

I've just been googling Shield Bugs but couldn't find a picture like this one. I meant to change my description! So thanks for IDing it.

This is a common occurrence in a number of shield bugs, as well as in many other insects. A cause of some confusion at times.
