Flying insect (bee-like) in Arborvitae

Clark, NJ

Hi,

I just noticed yesterday numerous (dozens) amounts of a “bee-like” insect flying in and out of a hole in one of my arborvitae. They are small and super fast, so hard to get a picture.

I’m from central NJ, I think it could be some type of hoverfly, but not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dan

Appears to be a wasp of some kind; definitely not a hover fly. What is their approximate size?

Thanks for the reply. They are tiny. They are so fast, can’t really get a good look. They literally zoom in and out, don’t land I would say no more than a 1/4 of an inch. Def the smallest bee I’ve seen. I can’t see a visible nest inside the arborvitae but they seem pretty docile. I’ve gotten pretty close to the tree and also mowed the lawn yesterday and they didn’t do anything.

More likely a wasp than a bee; nearly all the North American tiny bees that I am familiar with are either solitary ground nesters or cavity nesters.
