Iris mutation question

I have had White Wedgewood Dutch Irises in the same bed for 15 years. Occasionally the standards would show a hint of blue. This year I got a surprise. The bloom on the right is the normal color, the one on the left is, presumably, a mutation. Anyone have a clue what could have caused this?
