This tree was growing thru an azalea and was pulled out yesterday. It has long smooth leaves but also some pointy leaves. I’ve posted pic of leaves, stem and back of foliage. Also tap root. Thanks for your help.
SOLVED: Some kind of oak?
It looks like an oak to me.
But what kind?
There is a willow oak in the property so it could be that a bird dropped a seed or something. But what’s throwing me off are the Holly-like leaves. I’ve had 2 willow oaks and those didn’t have the Holly looking leaves
Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!
Willow Oak (Quercus phellos) - believe it or not - is in the Red Oak group of oak relatives. That means it can cross-pollinate (by windblown pollen from male catkins) with any other Red Oak group member that is blooming at the same time. Acorns from such crosses that dropped from that tree you mentioned could have the genetics to produce seedlings with leaf morphology that you've shown (once).
Look around for other such Texas oaks in the Red Oak group, such as:
Quercus falcata
Quercus marilandica
Quercus nigra
Quercus buckleyi
Quercus shumardii
and maybe even Quercus texana...
A few q. Shumardii in the immediate area. Thanks all for your help.
