Has anybody had any luck growing crepe myrtles on the western side of their house? In this case they are dwarf crepe myrtles and I want to put them on the west side of my garage. After about 1 or 2 o'clock there is sun until dusk.
Dwarf Crepe Myrtle
You will need to plan to water them through droughty conditions. This planting area should be well-mulched, also.
A drip hose under mulch often satisfies these kinds of requirements for success.
Thank you, Viburnumvalley. This is good to know. I will keep a soaker hose on them but sometimes here in SC we get tons of rain in June. I am going to have black landscape cloth on the ground around them to keep out weeds. Will that help or hurt the new crepe myrtles?
If it is porous cloth, that is better - since water should permeate through it.
If it is black plastic with no permeability, that is bad.
In either case, you will see weed seeds germinate in any mulch over landscape fabric situation. Landscape cloth only helps prevent weed growth from existing seed or plants in the soil.
The landscape cloth will also prevent organic matter from reaching the soil and benefitting your plants.
