Fallopia japonica coming back

Somers, NY

I have a growth of Fallopia japonica (var.) that's a good number of years old, but now it's leaving the "skeleton" of a small bush after the leaves are gone in the fall. Will new growth come out on the branches or will all the new growth come out of the ground? I'd like to know because if the new growth comes out only from the ground like in the past, I'll get rid of last year's growth. Thanks for any info.

Mine comes up from the ground (I have it in a pot though). Cut off the old stems as they are more than likely dead.

Here it was the end of March. The white won't show until later on.

THANKS!...it hasn't popped out of the ground yet...I'm in the NE...maybe in a couple of weeks. And, I'll get rid of that dead growth which will be a relief.

I've kept mine in a pot all these years fearing it would spread rapidly in the ground. I am so glad it hasn't spread by seed like the green form.

This was it in 2019.
