Bought a house last year and it popped up this year by our front porch. And of course now the snow and ice, etc. killed it though I tried wrapping with plastic. But it's really pretty and I want to know what it is so that maybe I can grow some in a greenhouse, etc. Beauty surprises when it isn't looked for, it seems.

Possibly a Celosia cristata type--AKA cockscomb
Agree with Celosia sp. seedling, which means it probably didn't come true to any one named selection.
These are annual species in most of the eastern US, like MD. You can easily find similar seed packs or starts of such plants at any garden center or annual flowers purveyor.
See if you can shake seeds from it and grow it next year as it is an annual.
