Wild violets

Saint Louis, MO

How do I eradicate wild violets. I have been digging them up to get all roots but there are patches I just can’t seem to get red of and I know they spread their seed elsewhere

Dig up the bigger ones but it seems like a losing proposition, spray the smaller ones with weed spray (it may take several applications), and put down pre-emergent before seeds start germinating. This will be a many year fight to get rid of them for good. Good luck, especially if they are in a lawn.

I remember years ago someone calling in to the the Martha Stewart show and asked this question. I'll never forget her reply, "Why would you want to get rid of them?" My Mom has wild violets and I dig some up every time I visit her and replant them in my own yard, hoping for them to take over.

Maybe the ones you and Martha are talking about are different than the ones that will take over a yard. Pretty when they bloom but so hard to get rid of and spread like wildfire.

I like the bird foot's violet but can't get any to take in my yard - see them on hillsides and in the forests. There is a nice looking tiny yellow flowering one with interesting leaves in the forests that I would like to get a small patch of but again no luck on starting any from seed.
