We came across these two in March of last year, they were fairly close to each other and one of them was missing an eye. We saw them in the redwood forests of Northern California.
Need help identifying newt

They are in the genus Taricha, either T. granulosa (rough-skinned newt) or T. torosa (California newt) - see http://www.californiaherps.com/identification/salamandersid/newts.html
