Hi Everyone,
I have just moved to La Lucia, South Africa and taken an interest in birds. Can anyone help identify these little beauties.
Thank You,
Steve.
CLOSED: South African birds
Hi Steve
At first glance I would say these are a species of weaver, possibly Southern Masked Weaver (African Masked Weaver) - females, as the males have a distinctive black face 'mask'. If you search for weaver birds of Southern Africa you'll see there's a great variety, but I'm pretty sure these are the ones I grew up with, building their cool suspended nest balls outside my window in Pinetown! Another beautiful weaver to keep an eye out for is the long tailed widowbird, in reeds and cane fields.
