Starvation Culture

Aurora, IL

Years ago when I grew lithops (Living Stones) I remember reading a book by Schwantes that discussed “starvation culture”. He claimed many succulents can be grown from seed, but instead of potting up to achieve growth, he suggested leaving them crowded together and cared for them just enough to keep the seedlings alive. He said that they can be maintained that way for years. The reasoning was that if you desire plants in the future, you can pull up that amount, pot them up individually, begin normal culture and the plants would respond accordingly. This way any number of plants can be on hand without having to maintain large numbers of full-size plants until desired. Has any one else heard of this or perhaps even tried it?
