My pawpaw trees have sent out many many many suckers that are coming up, not near the trunk, but many feet away (as much as 10') and some inside of evergreen shrubs as well as flowerbeds. How can I kill these so they don't come back but not injure the plants around them? I cut down the trees a year ago but this hasn't stopped the sprouts.
invasive pawpaw suckers
This is a Pawpaw plant's survival mechanism; they are naturally a colonizing species and suckering from their live root system ensures that they have plenty of stems from which to grow photosynthesizing leaves.
If you want to permanently eliminate Pawpaw from your landscape, you will have to treat the leaves on the stems (or cut surfaces of the stems) with something like Roundup. Be prepared to do this for a while.
If you have live Pawpaw trees that you do want to keep, then do NOT use Roundup, as this pesticide is translocated through the roots and will kill the entire plant - not just unwanted suckers.
