Planting for both sun & shade

San Diego, CA

Six months of the year (mid-spring to mid-autumn) this spot in my garden is shaded all day, six months of the year it gets hit with full sun from noon until dusk. I'm in hardiness zone 10b. A well-meaning friend built and installed this planter as a surprise (can't be moved easily; the boxes have no bottoms so if lifted, the potting mix goes every which way). Each box is 12" deep, the bottom level is a 30" square, middle is a 20" square, top is a 12" square. What might survive such dramatic changes in sun exposure over the course of the year?
