mums chewed off

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Just had the funniest thing happen. Planted 10 HUGE mums this fall and went out to check on things and 5 of them were chewed off - not from the top, but underground. When I gave a tug on them they came right out of the ground and the earth underneath sunk way down. What happened?? They are planted in a real sandy soil. Ever have this happen??? I took cuttings and put the under lights but don't know if they will survive. So sad....

Sounds like moles or voles. I have too many of both!

Harrisburg, NC(Zone 7a)

My grandmother always put moth balls around things the moles and voles liked to eat. Just stuck them in the ground a couple of inches.
she also put them in the tunnels they make. They don't like the smell of them and the mole will go play in the neighbors yard. Caster bean plants also work. The mole eats them and then moles are all gone! These plants are poison so if small children are around be very careful.
