Thunbergia Alata, My Arch Enemy

Yumbo, Colombia

This vine from Eastern Africa has been planted in many places around the world and is an absolute plague in Colombia at altitudes from about 1800m to 2300m. Wikipedia describes it as growing to two and a half meters but that is nonsense. On my place it grows to seven meters or more killing small trees. Where it has good sun it will completely cover and kill other vegitation. The only saving grace is that needing good sun as it does it can only damage the forest edge but not enter and continue the suffocation. Itīs stems branch near the ground to form multiple roots. Itīs seeds are easily spread by birds. Pulling it out by the roots is best but an imposible task when it gets established. Roundup works but also kills what itīs growing on such as the Hydrangia in my gardens. In most of the US itīs not a problem because it dies off from the Winter freeze but here in Colombia it continues growing year round.
