Replacing some perennials with small shrubs to reduce garden maintenance.

Waukegan, IL(Zone 5a)

I am looking for suggestions for small shrubs that can replace some of the high maintenance perennials in my gardens. Arthritis is becoming a problem and constant deadheading, dividing, weeding and cutting down in fall or spring etc. is getting harder. I have begun using more flowering shrubs like the little Chardonnay Pearls Deutzia, some of the smaller Weigelas etc. I don't mind a little light pruning. I'm hoping to do this in most areas of my yard which run the gamut of conditions, sunny, sunny and dry, shady, light shade etc. I would love to see some pictures of gardens that include shrubs of various sizes in a perennial garden.
