I decorate a faux palm tree in the family room. It goes back out on the deck when winter is over.
Artificial tree. It came with white lights, we add strings of colored ones. Beats all the needles in the carpet.

I didn't put up a tree this year. We have a nice artificial tree, but it's fairly big in diameter which means rearranging furniture etc. There were no children around our home over the holiday so.....
We have pleasant decorations around the home: ones that will stay up throughout the winter season.
Ours is a "fake" tree until we decorate it. Then it becomes a "real" tree filled with ornaments that are meaningful to us.
I have one that I made from some scrap 2"x4" pine lumber that has a center of readyrod and a huge wingnut at the bottom hidden in the legs. The 'arms' swing out to hold strings of lights, garland, ornaments and the base does an 'X' to hold it up. At the end I loosen the wingnut and it goes flat to store at the back of a closet until next year. It doesn't shed, it can be folded a little to allow for fitting a wall or corner, and it looks cutely rustic. It's good for the environment and will last for many years with very little care. One real tree gave for the cause, some milk paint makes it green and we love it.
