arnica

south central, WI(Zone 5a)

Does anyone know if it is a specific anica that is used for healing. I found the source for American arnica, but was told that mountain arnica was best (but not anything else!) Any help? Marcia

The official medicinal is A montana, which is native to the mountains of Europe and Asia. The American plant is A. chamissonis, and is native to western North America.

Both are used medicinally the same way, as a salve, compress, or, more rarely, internally in the form of a tincture. Long term use of the tincture is not recommended.

The aerial parts, primarily the flowers, are used in medicine.
