What kind of mulch do you use?
I use sand, washed river sand, which is the equivalent of children's play sand, as a form of "dust mulch". The sand doesn't harbor diseases or pests. In particular, pill-bugs, earwigs, slugs, and snails are prevented by a sand mulch.
And earthworms are favored by it -- they actually come up to "eat" grains of sand, which become a valuable part of their digestive system. Earthworms have the equivalent of a craw, like birds have, in which small stones act to break up food materials because earthworms and birds don't have teeth.
As a garden hobbyist I buy sand by the truckload, because it is less expensive that way, and I use a lot of it.

Bark mulch and a little pea gravel.
shredded leaf mulch goes in my vegetable garden space
Alll our lawn and garden waste goes into the veggie gardens, the flower beds are mulched with wood chips, we waste nothing. Kitchen scraps go into a big bin with leaves and become compost.
