Firewalls and Cookies?

I hope someone can explain this to me.

What is a firewall, what does it do, and why does going to Gardenweb "set it off" but not Dave's Garden? Do I need a Firewall on my computer?

Is it true that cookies set on my computer can retrieve my e-mail address? I know that websites USED to be able to do that, but I thought they fixed it so they can't now. I have learned to clear our my Temp Internet files nightly to get rid of the cookies.
