Colorado Spruce?

East Bridgewater, MA

This is a neighbor's tree I've always wondered about. I wasn't comfortable going in the yard so roadside picks were all I took. The cones look good for a Colorado Spruce but it's so damn skinny! Is it a particular variety of CS?

That doesn't look like a Picea pungens at all to me. Maybe a skinny Picea abies, but more like a Serbian Spruce - Picea omorika.

Walk up to it and take good closeups, already. Serbian Spruce has flattened vs. squarish needles, and the undersides of the upswept branches' needles will be strikingly glaucous.

I'm agreeing with ViburnumValley on your neighbours tree. Picea omorika grows narrow and upright. It was what I was thinking before he posted. A very desireable conifer.

Never walk in anyone's yard without permission! That is a surefire way to cause problems!

That being said, thanks for the ID. I thought is was a Serbian for years until I saw those cones.

Yep, Colorado Spruce is correct - the wavy cone scales are correct for that, and completely wrong for Serbian

Cool! I'm glad I got it right! Thanks!
