Unknown nut from tree

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

This nut came from a tree at my sister-in-laws tree and would like to know what kind of nut and tree this came . The just has intentions like it has carvings on it.

Thanks Clarsie

Always good to show the tree...

Could be the seed cluster from a Baldcypress (Taxodium distichum). These usually disintegrate into component pieces as they mature.

Did you collect this from the tree? Off the ground? Was it collected unripe and dried indoors?

Thanks Viburnum my brother picked it from the tree and he said it was already dry. I will take a picture of the tree when we go to the grave to visit my SIL grave.

Yep, a Baldcypress cone. Normally they disintegrate to release the seeds, but for some reason, this one has stayed in one piece.
