I finally have seen one variety of the one American species of bamboo. This is Switch Cane, Arundinaria gigantea tecta, that is native to the coastal plain from Maryland to Florida to Texas & Oklahoma. It gets to about 6 feet high and does spread by underground stems like most temperate bamboo species. I took these photos in Chesapeake, VA in mid-February 2017.
