I have been trying to grow a Japanese Maple for a few years and it never makes it through the winter. Maybe I don't have enough mulch on it, but the last three have not come up in the spring. I planted Cutleaf and Coral Bark, which are both for zone 4. Are there any tricks to making them survive the winter?
Best JM for zone 4
HiRuth, You are in a tough zone for many jm's. Coral Bark would never survive. Try a Acer japonicum variety they may do better. There are also some nice korean maples you could check out.
Davidsans Japanese Maples would have a bunch of selections to look at.
I took a look at Davidsans JM's and they look wonderful. The Coral Bark that I planted said that it was for zone 4. Good to know that it wouldn't survive but I don't know why they say it would in zone 4. Probably trying to make a sale.
I thought it might have been the terrible drought that we had in 2012, but I did water weekly, although the tree was pretty small.
Thanks for the advice.
