Observed in Los Altos Hill, CA around 6 pm local time.
CLOSED: Nuthatch?
Maybe it is a Pygmy Nuthatch?
I cannot pin-point this, but I do not see this as a nuthatch. The bill and the overall body shape are not quite right. Did you see the typical head down behavior as it feeds on a tree? I ruled out Gnatcatcher as they all look to have an eyering.
This time of year is hard for bird identification with all the young running around and I wonder if this bird is a youngster.
I hope someone else comes along to help you identify your bird. You have a very nice photo.
Pygmy Nuthatch is correct!
Resin
Resin, I wish you posted before I did. :) I looked at Pygmy, but because of the overall blue of Gudehus' bird, ruled it out. What did you see that I overlooked?
