container grown Gaura: Winter over?

Belfast, ME

I live in Maine, newly zone 5, used to be zone 4 and only made the acquaintance of gauras last year. they are lovely!

Is it possible to container-grow a gaura and then winter it over in protected space? One possiblilty for us is the attic of insulated but unheated garage which does have a window. It might get a light frost there but no more. Would the plant be expecting light? Any suggestions?

Many thanks!

I have tried this in an uninsulated attic where it never gets cold enough to freeze as long as it stays away from exterior walls. I find they break dormancy and grow out long and thin due to lack of light. What zone are you?
Why not try? Your conditions are not going to be exactly the same as anyone else's.

We are zone 5 (or so they tell us, tho' I still don't really believe it ; ) . Sounds like the trick is to keep them in dormancy. Wonder what that takes... When you tried did they have light?

There was a window but not enough light so the plants stretched.
