CLOSED: 2016 Ugly Mug Swap! Interest Thread

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

No matter what is going on at Dave's Garden, I'll bet each and every one of you STILL start your day with a mug of SOMETHING!

This year the "Uglee Mug Swap" turns six. This swap grew out of my boredom with the ugly mugs lining my cupboard, but thanks to so many of my DG friends my mugs runneth over. See image below!

Every morning I pull out a mug, and it sets the tone for the day. Most are colorful, some have a quip on the side, one clever mug is masquerading as a flower pot...Mugs have made my favorite pastime (coffee drinking!) even more special.

I am a coffee drinker though I dabble occasionally in the herbal teas. Some folks drink their soup/broth from their mug, some hot cocoa, others their hot toddy. Which one are YOU? Chime in and share what happens when YOU get to the bottom of your cup.

Sign up here by June 10 and let all packages ship on or before JUNE 29.

Like group trades of old, you will receive a Dmail from me with the identity of your secret mug trading partner. I recommend not revealing your superman/woman identity on DG but rather wait until your partner learns your Gawd-Awfulness when they open the magical box that arrives by Priority Mail. On this thread you can share your likes and dislikes so your Secret Swapper (SS) might better get to know YOUR special elixir preferences, favorite color, caffeine or not, flavored or not, etc. Please send me and only me the delivery confirmation code when you ship priority mail so we can keep track of packages.

This is only a mug trade, but feel free to include items that might accompany a morning cup of ____________. The mug you send to your SS does not have to be ugly! It's only a figure of speech as in, "Show us your ugly mug."

Kindly send me a Dmail to confirm that you're "IN" with full name, email, address, and phone number, and let the *swipping* begin!

Yes Debra, i was going to track you down. It would be less of a party without you here. :)

I am not sure if the glitches I'm seeing on the site are from using my cell phone or because of the site. :p

If you think of anybody out there who is not frequenting DG as much who has swappee mugz with us in the past feel free to lassooo them back here.

Hope everyone is well. I must sleep now!

Juhur posted on the insomnia thread about this thread. I don't think I am up to sending a mug, ugly or otherwise, but I have been literally thinking about my mug collection. We have been weeding--yard/garden with actual weeds--and all the CLOTHES that once fit me, don't fit me, got lost, shrank, stretched, blah blah blah. I have gained and lost 50 pounds! I have a lot of clothes but of course, I only wear a few things regularly. So I am trying to get rid of the rest of the stuff. Hard to believe there have been as many as 6 people living in this little house, and now it's just the two of us but it doesn't seem roomy yet. I know this is all terribly off-topic but you're the one who brought up the mugs!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Hahah...Carrie-you don't have to share your uglee mugs!

Greenfield, NH(Zone 5b)

Oh -- so happy it's mug swaping time again!
Love this swap....thanks for organizing it again for us Amanda!
I've fallen in love with blobby cat mugs....still love my old mugs tho!
I agree - the mug starts the day!

Aww, "Blobbi cats"??? Hahha

I'm not familiar with that phenomenon, but that's probably due to my self imposed exile from retail shopping. Ack.

Welcome back Candi! It feels like coffee time so I must be up and ATOM.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I like that one! I am not allowed to buy any more mugs either, Amanda.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Carrie - I'm just not allowed to buy anything. Ack.

Guys - I am so excited. Most of you regulars have watched me hem and haw over job stuff for as long as you've known me. It's been a rough transition from trial lawyer to plant enthusiast. I've spent the whole day applying to this super cool job with a national nonprofit to "protect pollinators." Good grief, every native plant enthusiast's dream job.

So I've been pounding coffee all afternoon and now I'm REAAAAALY hyper. Hahahah...

Need to get off my duff. It's stopped raining here and I have to go into work tonight (still part time with big box retail home improvement garden specialist!) so my glamorous life. Oh and by the way I am also part time now with the vegetable and herb distributor Bonnie Plants out of Alabama. Wheeeeee!

HAPPY FOR YOU, AMANDA. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY I AM FOR YOU! :d SORRY BOUT THE CAPS LOCK I AM AT WORK.. :p:p:p

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Good luck on the new position, I know you can do it!

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Happy days are here again! You go, girl!

Otway, OH(Zone 6b)

Good luck Amanda.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Awww, i have been laughed at at work ecause i am usually on the fly and arrive with a giant mug of coffee.

I knocked over one of my favorite mugs and a layer of glaze came off exposing ceramic underneath. Any ideas on how to remedy this without having to remove it from rotation? Sigh.

A.

Greenfield, NH(Zone 5b)

ahhh....I have no idea on fixing the glaze other than taking it to a ceremac shop and seeing if they can fire it for you again with a clear glaze.

Ok - protecting pollinators is going to be a cool job.....my husband once applied to count butterflies for the summer....that was a cool job! I am hoping and praying they pick you to protect the pollinators!!! Keep us posted!

My dad actually bought me two blobby cat mugs - like I need more - but he loved the one that said "coffee with catittude " and my mom liked "friends furever" so I lucked out with two new big chunky mugs. You know how I like a BIG mug....I don't want to have to refill and refill....just give me a big one with some weight to it! Then I'm in SIP heaven!

Greenfield, NH(Zone 5b)

Today I lost my cup of tea....how does one do that? I was roaming around the house - doing odds and ends - placed it down somewhere and I can't find it! According to my husband this isn't the first time....he's found have drunk mugs in weird places...once under a sink! Really?!?! Anyone else do this?

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Um, Candi...we share this mug misplacing recessive trait. xo

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Yep. Drives me crazy sometimes.

Glad I'm in good company!
Today was an iced tea sorta day...I had three -- YUM!
Can't wait for the weekend....I can relax - no real plans - maybe I'll even have time for two cups of tea before starting my fun garden chores....and MAYBE I won't lose my mug this time! XO

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

LOL.. Joe keeps track of all my cups, mugs and such, he is kinda weird that way... works for me. Hope you all had a good day today and a better one tomorrow..

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I lose them all the time. I will take one out with me to the front porch, and forget about it, then I will be walking the gardens and find one I set down to do some trimming.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

LOL Linda.. we need little beepers on our mugs.. push the button on a fob and our mug beeps.. like a car key fob LOL

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I like that idea.

Otway, OH(Zone 6b)

Me too. Sometimes I think I need that on a lot of things

Greenfield, NH(Zone 5b)

Love the mug beeper idea! We could design them to snap into the bottom of a mug or look like an accessory for the handle. Brilliant!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Sounds like we've got something here. I could use it for a million different things. :)

It's been a busy week. I watched as most of the city headed east for the holiday weekend until there were no cars left. And now the tropical storm. Oops. Haha.

I have this illness . . I keep bringing plants home. And soils. And plants. And seedz. I am not trying to recreate the old garden. It's odd but I don't feel quite at home here and I wonder if I will be moving again at the end of my year's lease. But I will still enjoy the garden. Thank you ladies for being a part of my support group for so long! I'd be lost if I didn't have anyone to talk to who understands. :)

Enjoy the weekend!

Greenfield, NH(Zone 5b)

Oh rats....someone stole our idea.....cheaper beepers everywhere and in different colors!

Amanda - your tropical storm is heading to NH in the form of rain all day tomorrow...yea for me and my plants. I really really hate watering the gardens by hand.

It's been crazy crazy weather here....yesterday it was 95F something we don't usually see until August and then only rarely! Today it was 61F...it felt like we were freezing. I went from digging and weeding in a tank top to working all day in my sweatshirt and not getting hot at all.

I have plant/dirt/seed disease as well. Thank goodness it isn't fatal....just exhausting! Amanda - take your inner garden everywhere you go.....and show it in your external gardens! There are times that I think I want to give up all this work and move to a condo....but I know I'd just have to start a garden there too....I hope your place starts to feel more like home soon!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

same disease here.. I happened to be driving by a plant nursery outlet and happened to come home with two flats of buy one get one free red begonias, some laurentia and some party time althenera.. *sigh*
I have no clue where I am going to put them, now..

Can't believe our idea has already been produced, dang.

Haha. Sick. You ladies are sick!!!

Today I came home with a kiddie pool for the turtles. The $7.98 variety. I'm torn about releasing them, but getting them out in full spectrum light and temps while I'm at home at least will be fun.

I try to plant a bit more every day. Coukd be finished but the area where my perennials are going in has a major chipmonk population and I'm afraid to dig there. Haha.

Have to open the department at 6 a.m. so once my insomnia comes in handy. Can't sleep now or I'll miss my shift. :p

Have a groovy day muglees! Time to make the donuts. And coffee.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I love the turtle areas, Amanda. I have tow sizes so far, a small one for ( Babies?) and the bigger taller one for Younger Children? Anyway, Gamera can climb out of the baby pool so I keep them both in the bigger one, under the T5's with an additional heat lamp, they seem to get along fine,, with some exercise a couple times a week outside with me chasing them around LOL I would release Gamera, she is all healed now, but after 8 years of domestication and all, I think she is a bit spoiled. Joe says she is always waiting down there when he takes her some fruit or tomatoes and the lil ( Lil Bit) one loves my home grown leaf lettuce. All the bugs and crawlies are in that pool alog with plants, soil, sand, wood chips and two little water plates. Certainly a lot different enjoying them rather than a dog or cat ... that is for sure... *sigh*

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Debra, I will have to discuss with you as I am torn about releasing them. They need at least 50 gal and I they are in 30 now. Of course they have filtration and UVB/UVA lights on timers, but i want better for them. I do enjoy them as much or more, just don't want to handle them too much if I am going to release them. Will send you a message to discuss.

Now back to my coffee.

Candi, do you still have the baby mugz? :)

I stopped drinking hot beverages of any kind about a year ago, which made my mug collection very sad. But in the last couple weeks, I have been buying myself a coffee at Dunkin Donuts a few times a week, and today I am drinking a mug of homemade coffee! I eook a picture but I am not sure how to upload it.
