Spring-planting Bulbs

Calgary, AB(Zone 3b)

I am trying out spring-planting bulbs this year, and now that I have them all planted, I have questions about how to plant them :)

The instructions indicate how deep the bulbs should be planted, with the measurement being the soil line to the top of the bulb. But some of the depths are as deep as 8" and I am skeptical about how that will work in my northern climate. Our growing season is so short; I am worried that if I plant them to that depth they'll pop up just in time for fall. What would happen if I planted them maybe 1" below the soil line? None of them are even close to being hardy in my climate, if that helps.

It would help to know what it is you've planted. Generally, though, planting depth won't matter a great deal. They'll probably be fine.
