It\'s no longer Clematis Henryi

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

I have two Clematis Henryi. They both are blooming but one has turned into something else. The blooms aren't as big, the edges of the petals are ruffled and the petals have some red-violet on the edges.
What do you think happened?

I think the most likely thing is a seed sprouted under the original and grew up right there, alternatively you have a sport. It sounds really pretty. I think you get to mane it- maybe Clematis 'Birder17' ;-)

I had some guys mulch my flower bed last spring. They tromped the heck out of my Henryi that is now something else.
I had to cut several of the vines back. I thought it had reverted back to some of its parentage.
If it was a "by chance" seedling, don't you think some of the original Henryi would also be blooming?
And even if I cut the vines back, I would think some of the "Henryi" would be present.

Hmm, yes I agree. Botanical mystery.

Maybe I'll ask some experts like Brushwood Nursery.
