Where Do You Buy Irises?

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

Where do you shop for the best iris prices? Do any of you ever offer irises for postage?

I am interested in getting more rhizomes..I only have a very few and the only one I have enough to trade some of is a pink "Beverly Sills" and I have a white that has a faint lavender tint to it..The rest I do not have enough to share as of now.

I have had good experiences with most internet vendors. I try to add notes about those I like in Plant Scout on DG. What I think you will find is that there is a wide variety offered between the various vendors so it is good to surf multiple vendors and pick the ones that you find offer what you find most attractive.

Take a look at "Lighthouse Flower Page" on Facebook. She has daylilies, too.

Larkie, I'm up here in Atlanta. At some point I, like you, may have rhizomes to trade, but I have not reached that point. Stay tuned.

My experience with buying irises is that you absolutely get what you pay for. I bought 11 different TB irises--at a great price! [keep reading]--from Breck's in late summer of 2014. The rhizomes were shipped with minimal packing material and sloppily attached tags, so almost half arrived unidentifiable. Of those, three didn't survive the first winter. Another survived but has never bloomed; I have no idea what it is. Only three bloomed the first year. The rest have taken between two and four years to settle in and start blooming more or less reliably. (Did I mention that one of those that has thriven isn't one I ordered? Fortunately, I like it, although I had no way of knowing until it finally bloomed last year.) Thanks to the lack of tags, I'm still--four years later--trying to figure out what survived and what didn't.

Breck's: never again.

In late summer of 2015, once burned, I bought eight varieties of TB irises from the iris specialist Schreiner's. Rhizomes arrived, plump, with lots of roots, packaged like a delicate excelsior-and-rhizome lasagna, all with tags securely attached. Every single one established itself the first winter. Three years later, not one one of those irises has died, and every one has bloomed, although their vigor varies. (But hey! This is Georgia--everything's an experiment, and not for the faint of heart.) And when it comes time to divide my irises, I'm going to get *so* many more from the Schreiner's plants, because they're so much farther along. . . .

In the end, the cheap irises from Breck's were more expensive than the expensive ones from Schreiner's. Lesson learned. Schreiner's has irises for as little as $7 apiece. They're a bargain.

Schreiner's: every time.

Hi, Larkie!

I have tons of irises, and they need to be thinned out big time. They are all colors and mixed. How many do you want? I'll send you a big box of them for price of postage.

Is there anyone here that would like some irises for the price of the postage? I can send as many as you want. I need to get rid of a lot of irises. All different colors mixed, so can't say what colors you will get, but they are all pretty! I need them gone ASAP.

I have about 1000 square feet of irises that need to go ASAP. FREE for cost of postage. I hate to see them get dug up and taken to the dump. Hubby will be digging them up and throwing them away soon :(

If anyone wants to rescue any, please send me your mailing address so I can ship them out to you ASAP!!
