Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus)
Beautiful bird. I really like the pattern of the wing. The first Broad-winged Hawk I saw was also at a raptor presentation. I later saw one in the wild. In flight they look so much larger than when up close like this.
Hawk Ridge MN counts the raptors passing over each fall. Birds that spent the summer in N Minnesota and Ontario encounter Lake Superior and ride the shoreline thermals all the way down to Duluth. On 2 days in Sep 2015 when I was there, they counted about 23,000 broad-winged hawks along with lesser numbers of other raptors. They have a web site.
